  • 2019 Season Casting

What is the audition timeline for the upcoming season?
Casting for the upcoming season takes place October through February.

How do I audition for Cal Shakes?
Auditions for specific productions are by invitation only. Actors who are new to us should attend General Auditions, which are held in the fall for the upcoming season. We also attend the Theatre Bay Area Generals, which are typically held in January/February. Due to department capacity, we are typically unable to hold individual auditions outside of these times.

How do I submit my materials?
See “2019 Season Casting” tab

Do I have to be a member of Actor’s Equity?
California Shakespeare Theater is a LORT-B level theater and primarily hires actors who are members of Actor’s Equity Association. Local, non-union actors are typically hired as understudies or in non-speaking ensemble members/supplemental extras.

Do you hire out of town actors?

Our ability to hire out of town is extremely limited due to the prohibitive cost of Bay Area housing. We are always interested in knowing when actors based out of town have access to local housing.

Will auditions be held outside of the Bay Area?

We do not typically hold auditions outside the Bay Area.

Do you accept video auditions?
Due to capacity, we are unable to consider unsolicited video submissions.

How can I be notified about opportunities to work with Cal Shakes?
Those interested in receiving audition updates and other alerts about opportunities to work with Cal Shakes are invited to join the Cal Shakes Artists Network group on Facebook.
