To support student achievement and teacher professional development, Cal Shakes brings Teaching Artists into the schools to teach with the aim of developing students' creative and academic minds and voices. We offer two types of residencies:
Arts Integration Collaborations
Supports the Teaching of Required Academic Curriculum
Arts Integration collaborations partner classroom teachers with Cal Shakes
Teaching Artists to integrate arts-based strategies into core curriculum
subjects such as English and History. This approach has yielded proven
results, with literacy scores increasing dramatically in just weeks.
Appropriate for 4th-12th graders.
Theater-Related Residencies
Such
as Acting, Shakespeare, or Stage Combat
These classes bring alive the magic of theater and Shakespeare. Students
may study specific theater disciplines, such as acting or stage combat,
or explore Shakespeare’s work. Playwriting opportunities are also
available, in which students write contemporized versions of Shakespeare's
plays. Appropriate for 3rd-12th graders.
We also offer after-school programs and book-ins at your school site in theater-related disciplines, such as acting, Shakespeare, and stage combat.

“[Our teaching artist] was outstanding. He is energetic, engaging
and insightful. He also has a wonderful rapport with the students. They
respect him yet feel they can approach him despite his commanding presence.
His drive for excellence is contagious and all the students strive to
work hard to meet his expectations. He has been such a wonderful influence
on our students.”
– Classroom teacher at Orinda Intermediate School, Orinda
