Theater Internships
The Theater Internship Programat Cal Shakes is designed to train individuals already pursuing a path in theater-related studies, providing the opportunity to further the participant’s goal of becoming a professional theater artist. By obtaining practical experience in a supportive environment, interns enhance their skills as guided participants and, eventually, as independent practitioners. The goal of our Theater Internships is to prepare young artists for possible integration into our organization as staff in subsequent seasons.
PARTICIPATION
By participating within a department, an intern receives on-the-job training and instruction while also being assigned tasks and projects to be completed independently. Participants in the theater internship program are integrated into the Cal Shakes staff, making contact with members of all departments. Interns have the opportunity to observe rehearsals and production/design meetings, and to shadow their supervisors in the execution of certain responsibilities. Adjustments will be made to the structure of the internship based on the individual’s skill level and personal goals for the experience.

Training
The training component of our internships supplement the education an intern receives through their academic program. Seminars are offered to enhance professional growth for the individual, exposing them to resources for future and long-term use as a professional theater artistIn addition, interns have the opportunity to cross-train in other departments to bring about an understanding of the process of creating professional theater as a whole.
