TRANSPORTATION
Cal Shakes does not provide transportation, however it is possible to participate in the Professional Immersion Program at Cal Shakes and not have a car. The Cal Shakes office and rehearsal hall is located one mile from the Ashby BART (train) station in Berkeley and there is a bus that picks up at the BART station and drops off just a few blocks from the office. The theater is also BART-accessible; there is a shuttle during performance evenings from the Orinda BART that also returns patrons to the BART station following the performance. Rides will have to be arranged during technical rehearsals as there is not a shuttle and BART stops running before we are done for the evening. Coordinating rides is the responsibility of the intern and it is expected that interns contribute gas money to repeat drivers, especially fellow interns. It is expected that those details will be worked out amongst the interns. Interns are responsible for getting themselves to and from work, on time.
HOUSING
Cal Shakes does not pay for housing but can arrange for affordable shared housing for the participants of the Professional Immersion Program. To be included in the apartment search, a deposit of $400 and a general housing application must be turned in by April 1. Any amount of the deposit not needed for the rental deposit will be put in an account to be applied towards apartment utilities. Any remaining utility money will be returned to the interns with the rental deposit after all fees are deducted post-move-out date. In 2008, seven interns shared a three-bedroom apartment for $285 a month each, within two miles of the office and two blocks of public transportation.
COMPENSATION
The Professional Immersion Program does not fiscally compensate participants. Interns are compensated with in-depth advanced training; meals will be provided at most of the trainings. We will, however, reimburse travel expenses for any Cal Shakes sanctioned errands. Participants of the Teaching Artist Fellowship will be given a stipend for lead teaching time.
