The Guiding Star award was presented to Oregon Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Bill Rauch. From his American Revolutions initiative – commissioning 37 new plays to dramatize moments in American history – to his leadership adopting diversity and inclusion as key guiding values for his organization, Bill’s leadership at OSF has galvanized arts institutions across the country, and inspired us at Cal Shakes to imagine ways a Shakespeare theater can remain relevant in the 21st century.

Luminary awards were presented to actor Julie Eccles, who has appeared in countless Cal Shakes productions including most recently last season’s Othello, and who lights up the stage with her grace and intelligence; Orinda Intermediate School Principal Michael Randall, who has been a loyal advocate of our Artistic Learning programs, ensuring that 4,000 middle school students have experienced the magic of Shakespeare in a theatrical context in their classrooms over the past 4 years; community partner and senior housing provider Allen Temple Arms, whose residents’ voices could be heard in our production of Fences, helping to bring the fictional word created by August Wilson to vivid life at the Bruns; and longtime Cal Shakes patron and supporter Peter Read, whose name you may not know because he prefers to be—in his own words—“an invisible hand”, but whose wisdom, governance, and financial support have made a significant impact on Cal Shakes over the years.
