Volunteers are a vital part of any nonprofit organization and California Shakespeare Theater is no exception. With over 840 current volunteers, our volunteer core represents a wide and diverse demographic. They hail from across the Bay Area from San Francisco to Orinda, to across the state from Grass Valley to Los Angeles. They are mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, coworkers and friends. Volunteering with California Shakespeare Theater can be a great opportunity to experience new things, spend time with family and friends, earn high school credit, fulfill community service requirements, see great theater for free, and, most importantly, achieve the feeling that you are paying it forward in the spirit of volunteerism.
Signing up is easy.

Volunteer opportunities
California Shakespeare Theater has a wide variety of Volunteer opportunities to fit any time commitment, talent, or interest. Below are just a few opportunities. For more up-to-date opportunities, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator and ask to be placed on the Volunteer Email List.
Administrative:
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in Theater? Cal Shakes is looking for fun and organized people to support us with the day to day administrative tasks. Some of the tasks include helping with bulk mailings, making phone calls and organizing the busy Cal Shakes headquarters. Be part of the behind the scenes work of this vibrant organization and sign up today. With the rehearsal space, costume, prop, and set shops all on-site, you’ll be at the center of activity year-round! This opportunity is not available from May 1 to August 30.
Theater Store:
Cal Shakes’ Theater Store is a fully functioning entity. If you like to shop and have an eye for the creative, sign up to become a Theater Store Associate today! You will get discounts on all the latest Cal Shakes swag.
Ushering:
Each of our 90 summer performances requires the help of 10-14 volunteer ushers to make sure all goes smoothly. Volunteer ushers distribute programs; help with seating; and assist with Will Call ticketing and general site upkeep. When seats are available, ushers are invited to enjoy the performance.
Annual Gala:
Every spring, Cal Shakes puts on a spectacular black-tie fundraising Gala. The Gala raises over $300,000 to support Cal Shakes’ artistic and educational endeavors. We need helpers from all walks of life including creative types, party lovers, shoppers, schleppers, thinkers, and doers. Please join us for one of the most exciting events of the year.
Will’s Weeders:
Cal Shakes presents productions in the stunning outdoor beauty of the East Bay Hills. However, even natural beauty needs a little TLC. The Will’s Weeders Committee meets routinely to weed, prune, plant, and shape this space to make our grounds picnic-worthy and picture-perfect.
Artistic Learning:
One of the goals of Cal Shakes’ Artistic Learning Department is to create links between our artistic programming and the classroom through school programs and year-round classes. We are looking for individuals to help at several Artistic Learning events like our popular Inside Scoops and Student Matinees. Help us bring the arts to young people across the state!
