Volunteers are a vital part of any nonprofit organization, and California Shakespeare Theater is no exception. With over 1,000 volunteers, our volunteer corps represents a wide and diverse demographic. Our volunteers hail from throughout the Bay Area, San Francisco to Pleasant Hill, to across the state, from Grass Valley to Los Angeles. They are mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, coworkers and friends. Volunteering with California Shakespeare Theater can be a great opportunity to experience and learn new things, spend time with family and friends, earn high school credit, fulfill community service requirements, see great theater for free, and, most importantly, pay it forward in the spirit of volunteerism.
There are many ways to lend a hand at Cal Shakes, and signing up is easy.

California Shakespeare Theater has a wide variety of Volunteer opportunities to fit any time commitment, talent, or interest. Below are just a few opportunities. For more up-to-date opportunities, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator and ask to be placed on the Volunteer email list.
Ushering
Each of our 90 outdoor summer performances require the help of up to 15 volunteer ushers to make sure all goes smoothly. Volunteer ushers distribute programs, help with seating, assist with Will Call ticketing, and do a little general site upkeep after each performance. Ushers get to see the show, so get a group of friends to usher with to make a fun night for everyone. Click here to read or download a copy of our current ushering manual.
Artistic Learning
Cal Shakes’ Artistic Learning programs create links between our artistic programming and the classroom through in-school residencies, Summer Theater Programs (camps), Audience Enrichment events, and Student Discovery Matinees. Help us bring the arts to young people across the region!
Gala
Every March, Cal Shakes puts on a spectacular black-tie gala to raise funds for our artistic and educational endeavors. We need helpers from all walks of life to create this unique, elegant party. Please join us for one of the most exciting events of the year.
Administrative
We always need fun and organized people to support us with the day-to-day tasks of our administrative offices, which include our Box Office, Development department, and Marketing department. Some of the tasks include helping with bulk mailings, making phone calls, data entry, and organizing the busy Cal Shakes headquarters.
