Volunteers are a vital part of any nonprofit organization, and California Shakespeare Theater is no exception, with over 1,000 volunteers from all over the Bay Area and from all walks of life.
Volunteering with California Shakespeare Theater can be a great opportunity to experience and learn new things, spend time with family and friends, earn high school credit, fulfill community service requirements, see great theater for free, and, most importantly, pay it forward in the spirit of volunteerism.

Each of our 84 outdoor summer performances require the help of up to 6 volunteer ushers to make sure all goes smoothly. Volunteer ushers distribute programs, assist with the blanket bin, distribute assisted listening devices, and do a little general site upkeep after each performance. Ushers get to see the show for free, so get a friend to usher with you and make a night of it! Click here to read or download a copy of our current ushering manual.
Cal Shakes’ Artistic Learning programs create links between our artistic programming and the classroom through in-school residencies, Summer Theater Programs (camps), Audience Enrichment events, and Student Discovery Matinees. Help us bring the arts to young people across the region!.
We always need fun and organized people to support us with the day-to-day tasks of our administrative offices, which include our Box Office, Development department, and Marketing department. Some of the tasks include helping with bulk mailings, making phone calls, data entry, and organizing the busy Cal Shakes headquarters.
Will’s Weeders is an all-volunteer-organized, -staffed, and –funded gardening group founded in 2001 to care for the Bruns Amphitheater’s abundant flora. Prior to the Bruns campus’ 2009-2010 renovation, the Weeders attended to the site’s landscaping for six months out of the year, readying and maintaining the grounds before and during the Cal Shakes season. With the addition of the living roof and copious new native planting, the gardening group meets at the theater every Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM beginning in March to weed, prune, replant, and enhance the native gardens. Let us know if you have any interest in joining this fabulous team.
