WORLD PREMIERE
John Steinbeck’s
The Pastures of Heaven
Adapted by Octavio Solis
Developed in collaboration with Word for Word Performing Arts Company
Directed by Jonathan Moscone
June 2–27

A brand new play with music, adapted by one of our country’s most talented and prolific playwrights. This richly theatrical play—commissioned especially for Cal Shakes—celebrates the art of storytelling as it depicts comic and heartbreaking characters in search of happiness in the seemingly idyllic landscape of Steinbeck’s own Salinas Valley.

Mrs. Warren’s Profession
By George Bernard Shaw
Directed by Timothy Near
July 7–August 1

Forthright Cambridge student Vivie Warren comes home to discover a shocking secret about her mother and the source of her family fortune in this brilliant, provocative comedy by master playwright George Bernard Shaw.  Timothy Near returns to direct, following her triumphant production of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya during our 2008 season.

Macbeth
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Joel Sass
August 18–September 12

Much Ado About Nothing
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Jonathan Moscone
September 22–October 17

Two wildly diverse plays. One, a thrilling supernatural tragedy. The other, a beautiful romantic comedy. All from one brilliant mind. Directors Joel Sass (Pericles, 2008) and Jonathan Moscone along with a team of designers celebrate Shakespeare’s imaginative landscape in productions that play off each other in surprising and revelatory ways. Featuring many of the same actors, both theatrical events will bring to vivid and unexpected life these magnificent examples of why Shakespeare remains The Man.
