Cal Shakes' home, the magnificent Bruns Amphitheater, is one of the most beautiful and unique settings imaginable to experience live theater. Located in the Siesta Valley between Berkeley and Orinda, our plays are set against a beautiful backdrop of rolling East Bay hills and summer sky.
The Great Outdoors With the sound of the coyotes in the far off distance and the smell of eucalyptus leaves in the air, there's no mistaking the Bruns for an indoor theater. Complimentary blankets are provided on chilly evenings, but remember to dress warmly for cool nights and bring sunscreen and a hat for sunny matinees.
Gourmet Food On-Site The grounds open two hours before curtain so you can enjoy a picnic and relax in our beautiful eucalyptus and oak groves. Classic Catering's delicious and affordable gourmet meals, beer and wine, as well as Peet's coffee and house-made desserts are available at our Midsummer Night's Cafe. And, yes, you can eat and drink inside the theater! (But please be mindful of noise and unwrap all items before the performance begins.)
Picnic Skip dinner indoors and share a picnic with friends in one of our beautifully landscaped groves. Classic Catering’s delicious and affordable gourmet meals, beer, and wine are available at our Midsummer Night’s Café, or you can plan ahead and bring your own feast. If you’re bringing a group, you can arrange catering in advance through Classic Catering. Groups, as well as members at the Director’s Level and above, can also reserve picnic tables in advance.
Grove Talks Led by resident Grove Talks speakers, these free, informal 20-minute talks are held on site 45 minutes before each and every performance, offering invaluable insight into the play and the production.
Art in the Groves Arrive early and stroll through our eucalyptus-lined sculpture gardens—our annual installation, Art in the Groves, features a wide variety of three-dimensional works, scattered throughout the Bruns grounds.
Parking & Transportation Take BART to Orinda and you'll be picked up and brought back for free. Or park free on site at the Bruns. A shuttle bus will take you up to the theater or you may enjoy the short hike.
Access With shuttle service from the parking lot to the lobby and wheelchair seating available, the Bruns Amphitheater is fully accessible to patrons with mobility restrictions.
